Studio study / 01 / Inspectable demonstration

An identity you can inspect.

I built this system for VertexLineup. This is the studio’s own identity, shown as working assets and applications. It is not a client case study.

The brief

One studio.
Nine kinds of work.

I needed an identity that could hold a website, a proposal, a spreadsheet and a training document. The main expression is Ink and Space: warm black, paper, platinum and a small vermilion square.

I kept the name. I replaced the main gold treatment with a quieter system. Signature by VertexLineup remains a customer expression within Brand & Graphic Design.

Decisions made

  • An outlined wordmark for the studio name.
  • A separate geometric V for small spaces.
  • Instrument Serif for short display lines.
  • Manrope for reading, navigation and controls.
  • Paper and ink artwork used once per composition.

Actual outlined SVG assets. The dark and paper specimens share the same geometry. No installed font is needed to render the logo.

Wordmark minimum
180px on screen. 36mm in print. Exterior clear space: half the capital height.
Mark minimum
16px on screen. 5mm in print. Exterior clear space: half the visible V width.
What stays fixed
Proportions, outlined shapes and clear space. Use the compact mark in small spaces.

Colour and typography

A small palette.
Clear jobs for each face.

Decorative detail

The vermilion square carries no essential information. I use readable text alongside any status or selection. Small text stays in Manrope.

Instrument Serif / 400

Design with room
to think.

Short display lines. A restrained contrast with the body face. No extended interface labels.

Manrope / 400, 500, 600

I agree the output, price and review dates before work starts. I check the finished files before handoff.

Body at 400. Labels and navigation at 500. Controls at 600. These specimens render from the site’s actual local font files.

Two expressions / One studio-owned system

The brief decides
the visual expression.

Ink and Space is the main VertexLineup identity. Signature is the studio’s historical gold expression, retained as an option within a suitable customer brief. Both examples below belong to the studio. No client commission or outcome is claimed.

Room
for the work.

Design. Content. Business support.
Studio application / Paper cover

Ink and Space / Editorial and practicalShort display lines. Asymmetric spacing. Paper surfaces and a registration detail. I use this expression for the studio website and operating documents.

Signature by VertexLineup

first impression.

Historical studio expression
Application specimen / Presentation cover

Signature / Formal and framedAn outlined Cinzel lockup, cream and gold on void. Centred composition and a restrained frame. The presentation heading is a system-serif application specimen; the downloadable logo is outlined.

Choose around the customer task

For a document someone must scan and use, I favour the editorial hierarchy. For a brief that calls for a ceremonial presentation, I test the framed expression. I assess the actual audience and uses before selecting either.

Keep one expression per project

I agree the logo treatment, hierarchy and application set first. I do not mix the gold logo into the Ink and Space studio header or present the historical expression as a separate business.

Downloads are the studio’s own assets for inspection. They do not transfer the VertexLineup identity or grant permission to use it as another business’s logo. A client handoff supplies the client’s agreed identity, exports and usage instructions.

Copywriting specimen / Actual studio copy

Edit the sentence.
Keep the facts.

These examples start with actual copy on the studio’s About page. The edits demonstrate compression and hierarchy. They are editorial samples, with no conversion result claimed.

Current About copy / Before

I use AI for research, drafts and production assistance. I check sources, challenge assumptions and test the output. A generated draft still needs decisions, editing and a working final file.

Editorial sample / After

I use AI for research, drafts and production. I check the facts, test the work and make the decisions.

Decision: bring the responsibility into the same short statement as the production method. Retain the source-checking and testing claim. Add no speed, quality or revenue claim.

Current About copy / Before

I agree the output, price, deadline and revision allowance before work starts. Additional work needs an approved change.

Editorial sample / After

I agree the output, price, deadline and revision allowance before work starts. You approve any added work.

Decision: replace the abstract change statement with the client’s action. Keep the scope agreement and approval gate. The full contract still defines how changes affect cost and timing.

Every client brief receives a defined scope and quote. The studio sample demonstrates a design system. It does not establish a client’s trademark clearance, print result or business performance.

Source basis: the studio’s outlined assets, assets/brand/; its implemented rules, BRAND-SYSTEM.md; selected identity tokens, tokens.json; and owner-approved website terms in VL-CONTEXT.md. The proposal and payment layouts are studio specimens.
